The most reliable way to confirm if an iPod Classic is a Gen 5.5 (the GOAT) is to check if the serial number ends with one of the following 3-digit combinations:
V9K, V9P, V9M, V9R, V9L, V9N, V9Q, V9S, WU9, WUA, WUB, WUC, or X3N
You can also verify the serial on Apple's warranty coverage tool. If it says "Late 2006" that means it's a Gen 5.5.
